UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship Scheme 2008-2009

The Chevening Scholarship Scheme offers the chance for successful candidates to undertake a year’s fully funded study at a University in the United Kingdom. It is aimed at highly motivated, extremely capable individuals who have already made an impact in their chosen career. It is funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council.

Applications for the Chevening Scholarship scheme for the academic year 2008-9 are now being accepted (opening and closing dates are shown below). Candidates are invited to apply for a 12 month full-time Masters degree at a UK university.

Competition for Chevening scholarships is strong. A typical successful applicant would be:

* Established in a career which is key to Iraq’s economic, social and political development, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are 25–35 years old.

* Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK

* A graduate with proven academic skills

* Able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship

* Someone with very good written and spoken English skills. Most UK higher education institutions require a minimum 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System for admission to Postgraduate courses.

When is the application deadline?

* The deadline for members of IFUW national federations and associations varies by country, but normally falls between 1 September 2007 and mid-October 2007. Please ask your national headquarters for the exact deadline.

We aim wherever possible for an equal number of female and male scholars.
